Tripura is a mountainous land cleft by valleys of about ten rivers. Legends speak of the existence of Tripura as a political entity from the days of the epic, Mahabharata. The temples reflect the religious preference of a long established Hindu dynasty. Flat plains and warm humidity make Tripura a travelers' dream.

Agartala the capital of Tripura, houses many adventure spots. Most important is Arkaneer, developed by the Science and Technology Department, it encompasses a Museum and a subliminal image of Wildlife.

Wildlife Tourism
About 2/3rd area of the state is under forest cover where different species of trees, orchids, birds and wild life are found. Tripura offers excellent opportunities for eco-friendly tourism and different wild life sanctuaries in the state offer various attractions to the tourists.

Tripura, the tiny land- locked state, has a wide variety of forests and wildlife, which can prove attractive enough for the tourists and the inquisitive. Rowa, Sepahijala, Trishna and Gumti are the four sanctuaries in this state. There is a vast water reservoir covering approximately 300-sq. km. in Gumti. This reservoir attracts many resident and migratory birds. Rowa presents ample scope for a Botanist's study. In Trishna, there are patches of virgin forests, which are rich in rare vegetation. The crab eating Mongoose, which were last sighted about 72 years ago in India, has been rediscovered in Sepahijala.

Sepahijala Wild Life
More than 150 species of residential birds are found here. Winter brings here a flock of birds. An Orchid Garden, a Botanical Garden and a Zoo make Sepahijala a Tourists' delight. Variety of wildlife and unshackled scenic beauty plus rubber and coffee plantations are worth- seeing. Elephant joy- rides and boating facilities are added advantages. "Barbe's Leaf monkey" popularly known as Spectacled Monkey.

Trishna Wild Life Sanctuary
Trishna Wild Life Sanctuary is located at about 100 Km. away from Agartala in Belonia Subdivision of South Tripura District. Bison is the main attraction in this sanctuary, in addition to the resident and migratory birds.

Tripura is blessed with a large number of natural and artificial lakes throughout the state.

Dumboor Lake
A water area of 41 with an un-ending spell of luxuriant green vegetation all around stands majestic for her exceedingly charming beauty and 48 islands in the midst of the lake. Migratory birds, Water sports facilities are additional attractions. There is a Hydel Project near the lake from where River Gomati originates and this is called Tirthamukh where on 14th January every year famous 'Pous Sankranti Mela' takes place. The lake is the confluence of rivers Raima and Sarma. Various species of migratory birds are noticed in the winter and it has rich reservoir of natural and cultured fishes.

Rudrasagar Lake
Rudrasagar lake, about 55 Km. away from Agartala near Melaghar having 5.3 Sq.Km. water area is another big attraction. In the center of the lake the famous lake palace of Tripura namely Neermahal is built. The lake witnesses a large number of migratory birds in every winter. Every year a boat race is organized in July/August. The visiting tourists can enjoy boating facility in the lake.

In addition, there are huge lakes at Udaipur namely Amarsagar, Kalyansagar, Jagannath Dighi, Mahadev Dighi and Sukh Sagar which were excavated by the then Maharajas. These lakes add beauty to the Udaipur town which is also known as City of temples and lakes.
