Snow Skiing in India

Skiing Requirements
Skiing requires speed and skate skis on a prepared track. Edges provide stopping control and the construction of the ski is much tougher. Check with ski clubs in the area for more information. Most clubs hold classes for beginners throughout the winter season. Good skiing requires a lot of practice, patience and energy. Pay attention to posted signs, ski in control & don't ski in closed areas.

Exercises
A very good exercise is required for skiing so simple exercises such as work on your legs is "wall sits" is recommended.

What to wear
Depends on what level skier you are. If you're a beginner, any loud colour will do, the brighter the better. This will enable other beginners to see you clearly from a distance, and plan a course, such that no matter what you do, they will run into you. If you're an expert skier, you'll prefer pastels, earth tones and lighter colours, making you a less visible target for crash and burn types. Major Skiing Regions In India
Gulmarg
It is known as Kashmir's premier upland hill resort at the the altitude of 2, 730m and offers one of the largest and best equipped winter sports opportunities in India. The snow conditions over here remain excellent over here from the months of December to April. Skiers can find all kind of modern facilities and world class equipments for skiing in Gulmarg.

T-bars, ski-lifts, chair-cars, and rope-ways are inbuilt. skating and heli-skiing, too are encouraged here. The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering, where skiing courses are offered, is also located over here.

Garhwal and Kumaon
The large slopes of Garhwal and Kumaon covered with seasonal snow become an ideal place for skiing in the winter months. With their wide open spaces above the snowline, Garhwal and Kumaon offer yet another exciting possibility for the skier - the ski touring amongst the majestic glaciers.

Auli in Garhwal Himalayas in Uttaranchal is also counted as another major skiing resort of India. It has fine snowy slopes, magnificent fine forests and overlooks the towering Himalayan peaks of Nanda Devi, Kamet, Mana Parbat and Dunagiri.

Himachal Pradesh
Who can forget the ultimate destinations such as Kufri, Narkanda, Manali in Himachal. The Manali Region in Himachal Pradesh also offers scope for winters as well as summer skiing. It has excellent natural slopes and in the summer months has limited skiing possibilities at Narkanda. Last but not the least is Kufri, which has always been a favorite among ski lovers who visit Shimla in winters. So prepare your skies and zoom through the snow.
